Our three USO Centers are temporarily closed our team has been busy working with military leadership at both NAS Jax and NS Mayport to understand their current challenges as we face this new paradigm for meeting their needs.
As the leading organization in Jacksonville, and the nation, serving the men and women in our military service, along with their families, our USO remains in close alignment with the military commands at all the installations in the Greater Jacksonville Area as well as supporting the 8,000 Florida National Guard members who are supporting the Governor in his efforts to manage the COVID-19 crisis.
As the outbreak continues to evolve, our USO has had to pivot to reallocate resources across our region as we work to care for our military members and their families, while also aiding in reducing the spread of the virus.
A few examples of our USO support in action include:
• Our first major activity of mission delivery was on Friday, 27 March, when a small group of our USO team members, including myself, delivered 500 Jersey Mike’s subs to our brave service members working on the front lines at the Naval Hospital at NAS Jax! The CO and all the hospital staff were happy to see us – from a safe social distance of course!! Our great partner Jersey Mike’s was so grateful! It was a great success!! Our first No Dough Dinner 2Go!
Go to Facebook/GreaterJacksonvilleAreaUSO to see some great pics.
• Our Center staff has initiated a Facebook Live Cooking Class, Cooking with Julie. The first broadcast was Tuesday, 24 March from our Mayport Center kitchen. Julie baked a delicious homemade bread for our audience of navy spouses’ and it had over 1200 views! The next broadcast will be Tuesday, 31 March, and we will continue this virtual program indefinitely.
• As we work through this temporary new normal we will be working to help keep minds and bodies active by providing virtual services for our military service members and their families, as well as some limited socially distanced “drive-by” programs such as our Healthy Military Families Initiative food distributions, that will be done by appointment only, in partnership with Humana Military and Feeding Northeast Florida.
